International workshop “Sustainable development of transboundary areas within the Altai region” took place in Urumqi (PRC), and was aimed to discuss the prospects for transnational extension of the Russian World Heritage Property “The Golden Mountains of Altai”

International workshop “Sustainable development of transboundary areas within the Altai region” took place in Urumqi (Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region) on the 28 and 29th of November 2012, organized by the Science and Technology agency of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, Urumqi, PRC together with Altai state technical university, Barnaul. The representative of the Natural Heritage Protection Fund presented the report on the prospects of transnational extension of the nomination “The Golden Mountains of Altai”.

 

This workshop was attended by representatives of the government institutions, scientific and social organizations of three countries: China, Russia and Mongolia. The participants made presentations and discussed the current problems (and their possible solutions) of sustainable development and climate changes in the Altai region, within the territories of China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation.

 The participants supported the idea of extension of the Russian World Heritage Property “The Golden Mountains of Altai” and made arrangements for the international work meeting in order to discuss technical aspects of the extension of the nomination (forming up national working groups, creating work schedules, performing delimitation of national sites ready for nomination as well as of their buffer zones and etc.) in May of 2013 in Ulan Bator.
