Development of Management Plans for Specially Protected Areas (SPAs) composing the Volcanoes of Kamchatka World Heritage site

Four of SPAs composing the Volcanoes of Kamchatka World Heritage site, namely the Kronotsky State Biosphere Reserve, Uzhno-Kamchatsky Zakaznik, Nalychevo and Bystrinsky Nature Parks, will be provided with 2009-2013 management plans, which will be developed during 2008 in the framework of a UNDP/GEF project "Demonstrating Sustainable Conservation of Biological Diversity in Four Protected Areas of Russia's Kamchatka Oblast".

The purpose of the project is to provide management teams of the abovementioned SPAs with a middle-term (for a period of 2009-2013) management&development program.

The management plans will be elaborated with due account of the specific of World Heritage status and will provide for an effective use of the status for local social and economic development.

This UNDP/GEF initiative follows a project on the development of a management plan for the Uvs Nuur Hollow World Heritage site realized in 2007 with support of the Natural Heritage Protection Fund. Alexey Butorin, the director of the Fund, is to be a consultant for the new project.
