Application forms for inscription Kazakh and Kyrgyz parts of the nomination to the Tentative lists of two republics have been developed and submitted to the World Heritage Center as part of the project for the transnational serial nomination Western Tien-Shan preparation.

"Bikin River Valley" Tentative List Submission Format surrendered to The Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO
Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology have been submitted the "Bikin River Valley" Tentative List Submission Format to the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO for the purpose of its further submission to the World Heritage Centre. Due to the two protected areas located in the upper and middle stream of the Bikin River, it is in plan to extend already existing "Central Sikhote-Alin" World Heritage property.

Magadansky Reserve World Heritage nomination have been submitted to the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO
Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology have been submitted the Magadansky Reserve World Heritage nomination dossier to the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO for the purpose of its further submission to the World Heritage Centre. Preparation of the nomination dossier for the only protected natural area within the Magadansky Region was supported by the Governor, Dudov N.N., in February 2005 Magadansky Reserve was inscribed on the Tentative List of Russian Federation.

Google and UNESCO announce alliance to provide virtual visits of several World Heritage sites
Sites of outstanding universal value inscribed on the World Heritage List - the Palace of Versailles in France, the historic centre of Prague in the Czech Republic and the old town of Cáceres in Spain, for example - can now be explored online by internet users around the world, thanks to an alliance signed by UNESCO and the international corporation Google.

General Assembly elects 12 new members to World Heritage Committee and sets priorities for future of Heritage Convention
Twelve new members were elected to the World Heritage Committee during the 17th General Assembly of States Parties to the World Heritage Convention, held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France from 23 to 28 October. The new members of the Committee are Cambodia, Estonia, Ethiopia, France, Iraq, Mali, Mexico, Russian Federation, South Africa, Switzerland, Thailand and United Arab Emirates. Each country will serve a mandate of four years.

The preparation of the transnational nomination "Daurian Steppes" renewed
The annual international conference on "Environmental cooperation of the Trans-Baikal region (Russia), the Autonomous Region of Inner Mongolia (China) and the Eastern aimak (Mongolia) in the transboundary ecological regions" held in Chita on the 21-23 of October. Within the conference a workshop "The preparation of the transnational nomination "Daurian Steppes" as a World Natural Heritage site" took place.

IUCN expert mission to the Tajik national park
During the period from the 25th of September to the 5th of October the IUCN expert mission in Dushanbe, Khorog, Murghab and the Tajik National Park came about for the decision-making over the inclusion a natural site "Tajik national park (Mountains of the Pamir)" on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Repeated IUCN expert mission to Putorana Reserve completed
During 3-9 of September repeated IUCN expert mission to Putorana Reserve, Moscow and Norilsk came about over solution of a problem of inclusion of a natural site "Putorana Plateau" in the UNESCO World Heritage List. During the visit, the IUCN expert primarily studied the issues that forbid inscribing the Reserve to the World Heritage List over the results of the first mission in August 2007.

Within the framework of the preparation for the nomination "Ilmensky Mountains" the field work in Ilmensky Reserve took place
In August 14-21 the group of specialists of the Institute of Geography of RAS, Institute for Cultural and Natural Heritage and the Natural Heritage Protection Fund worked in Ilmensky Reserve. Jointly with the Reserve staff all the necessary documents for dossier nomination prepared, the key sections of the nomination discussed, further joint action brought into line.

Nomination Dossier ''Natural Park ''Lena Pillars'' will be re-represented in the World Heritage Centre before February, the 1st, 2010
Nomination dossier ''Natural Park ''Lena Pillars'', which was not recommended by the IUCN for inscribing on the World Heritage List because of any of the stated criteria, had been withdrawn from the 33rd WH session consideration by Russian Federation. Adapted nomination will be re-represented in the World Heritage Centre before February, the 1st, 2010.

33rd World Heritage Committee session results
The World Heritage Committee holding its 33rd session has inscribed two new natural sites and 11 cultural sites on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Since it also withdrew one site - from the List, Dresden Elbe Valley (Germany), the List now numbers a total of 890 properties.

Preparation of the Ilmensky Mountains World Heritage Nomination Dossier has started
Drafting has started of a dossier to nominate the Ilmensky State Nature Reserve for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The nomination process has been initiated by the Chelyabinsk Region Authority and supported by the RF Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the RF Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

33rd Session of the World Heritage Committee to meet from 22-30 June in Seville, Spain
The World Heritage Committee will meet for its 33rd session in Seville, Spain from 22-30 June. During the session, the Committee will consider requests for the inscription of new sites on UNESCO's World Heritage List and examine the state of conservation of sites already inscribed on the List. The Committee is chaired by H. E. Mrs Maria Jesus San Segundo, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Spain to UNESCO.

Nomination "Tajik national park (Mountains of the Pamir)" submitted to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre
The documents for the nomination "Tajik national park (Mountains of the Pamir)" have been submitted to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. The preparation of the nomination was completed during the working visit of the expert of the Natural Heritage Protection Fund to Dushanbe on 20-23 January. "Tajik national park" may become the first site of Tajikistan on the World Heritage List.

Steering meeting on the creation of the management plans for the Kronotsky Reserve and the South Kamchatka Federal Preserve
In the framework of the UNDP/GEF project "Sustainable preservation of the bio-diversity: four Specially Protected Nature Areas in the Kamchatka region of the Russian Federation" a steering meeting was held on 28 October in Elisovo to work out the management plans for the Kronotsky Reserve and the South Kamchatka Federal Preserve, which make part of the World Heritage site Volcanoes of Kamchatka.

The booklet is based on the materials of the Volga Delta nomination dossier prepared jointly by the Natural Heritage Protection Fund, the Astrakhansky State Biosphere Reserve, RAS Institute of Geography, Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov and the Russian Research Institute for Cultural and Natural Heritage named after D.S. New site Ilmen Mountains has been added to the Russian Federation Tentative List of properties nominated for inscription on to the UNESCO World Heritage List
The Ilmen Mountains will be the second, after the Valamo archipelago, mixed (natural and cultural) site on Russia's Tentative List, which now includes 7 natural sites; two of them - Putorana Plateau and Lena Pillars - are currently under consideration in the World Heritage Center, others are the Magadansky Reserve, Daurian Steppes, Commander Islands, the Great Vasyugan Mire and the Krasnoyarsk Pillars. The RF Tentative List also includes 13 cultural properties.

On August 18-20, 2008, a seminar called "The Virgine Komi Forests as a model natural World Heritage site" took place in Vuktil, Republic of Komi
The seminar was held within the framework of a project "Enhancing biodiversity conservation and speeding up the local social and economic development through effective use of the UNESCO World Heritage status". The project is coordinated by the Natural Heritage Protection Fund; financial assistance is provided by Matra/KNIP program (small-scale nature management projects).

The 32nd session of the UNESCO's World Heritage Committee is over
The 32nd session of the UNESCO's World Heritage Committee took place on July 02-10, in Quebec (Canada). 27 new sites in 25 countries were inscribed on the World Heritage List. UNESCO's World Heritage List now numbers a total of 878 sites, 679 cultural and 174 natural sites and 25 mixed in 145 countries.

Results of a scientific and practical workshop "The Green Belt of Fennoscandia: current situation and future prospects"
On June 9-11, 2008 an international scientific and practical seminar called The Green Belt of Fennoscandia: current situation and future prospects took place in Petrozavodsk (RF). The seminar was organized by RAS Karelian Scientific Center, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fish Industry and Ecology of the Republic of Karelia and the Kostomukshsky State Nature Reserve with the participation of the Finnish Ministry of Environment and the Finnish-Russian Working Group on Nature Conservation. More than 80 experts from Russia and Finland attended the workshop.

New biodiversity conservaton project is launched
The Natural Heritage Protection Fund is starting a new project Enhancing biodiversity conservation and speeding up the local social and economic development through effective use of the UNESCO World Heritage status. The Virgin Komi Forests, which is the first Russian natural property obtained World Heritage status, is chosen as a model site to realize the project. The site consists of two federal specially protected areas (SPA): the Pechero-Ilychsky State Nature Reserve and the Ugyd Va National Park. The project is supported by Matra/KNIP program (Small Nature Management Projects) and is meant for the term of 1 year.

UNESCO/IUCN mission to evaluate the state of conservation of the Western Caucasus World Heritage site has completed its work
In pursuance of a decision of the XXXI Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee a UNESCO/IUCN expert mission was held in Russia on April 18-25. The mission's task was to evaluate the current state of conservation of the Western Caucasus World Heritage site, its management situation, and those of the development projects in the areas neighbouring the World Heritage site, which are connected to the pre-Olympic building activities in the Krasnodarsky Krai and the construction of a motor road in the territory of the Republic of Adygeya.

Development of Management Plans for Specially Protected Areas (SPAs) composing the Volcanoes of Kamchatka World Heritage site
Four of SPAs composing the Volcanoes of Kamchatka World Heritage site, namely the Kronotsky State Biosphere Reserve, Uzhno-Kamchatsky Zakaznik, Nalychevo and Bystrinsky Nature Parks, will be provided with 2009-2013 management plans, which will be developed during 2008 in the framework of a UNDP/GEF project "Demonstrating Sustainable Conservation of Biological Diversity in Four Protected Areas of Russia's Kamchatka Oblast".

The Lena Pillars nomination dossier, prepared and submitted to the World Heritage Center by the Russian Federation in 2007, met all of the technical requirements outlined in the Operational Guidelines concerning nominations to the World Heritage List and is determined to be technically "complete".

Preparation of the Magadansky Reserve World Heritage nomination is resumed
The work on the preparation of the Magadansky Reserve's nomination dossier has been resumed after a 4-year break. Agencies participating in the project are the Natural Heritage Protection Fund, the Institute of Geography RAS, the Technical University of Dresden and the Russian Research Institute for Cultural and Natural Heritage.

Ancient Sogdiana - potential UNESCO World Heritage Site
An International Practical Conference "Ancient Sogdiana: Past, Present and Future" took place on 18-19 October in Dushanbe. The conference was dedicated to issues of conservation and development of the Yagnob valley and its people - Yagnob small mountain ethnic group (5000 people), speakers of ancient Sogdiana language.

The Lena Pillars nomination file sent to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre
The Lena Pillars nomination file for inscription of the Nature Park of the same name of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) on the World Heritage List has been sent to the World Heritage Centre. The Lena Pillars is the 12th natural complex nominated by Russia for receiving the high status of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The 31st Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee
