Work continues on the preparation of the Western Tien-Shan transnational serial World Heritage Property

Second Sub-Regional Meeting on the nomination of the Western Tien-Shan as a transnational serial World Natural Heritage Property attended by specialists from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan was held with the support of the UNESCO on September 22-23, in Tashkent.

Since the first meeting was held in July 2007 in Alma-Ata the three Republics have prepared their respective parts of the transnational nomination dossier and developed management plans for specially protected areas proposed for inclusion in the territory of the World Heritage Property: the Aksu-Jabagly Reserve, the Karatausky Reserve and the Sairam-Ugamsky National Nature Park (Kazakhstan), the Sary-Cheleksky Reserve, the Besh-Aralsky Reserve, the Padysha-Atinsky Reserve (Kyrgyzstan) and Chatkalsky Reserve (Uzbekistan).

During the second meeting the experts considered and agreed upon the national portions of the site, developed and approved the text of the nomination dossier concerning: justification of outstanding universal value; criteria; integrity of the Western Tien-Shan World Heritage site. They also developed an action plan for the preparation of the nomination dossier and establishment of coordinated management system, and outlined probable sources of financial support for this work. According to the achieved agreement the nomination dossier is to be delivered to the UNESCO World Heritage Center before September 30, 2010.

Consultancy assistance for the preparation of the Western Tien-Shan will be provided by Alexey Butorin, the president of the Natural Heritage Protection Fund.
